Shiur with Rabbi Joel Start: 21/02/2010 - 11:30

At the Leonard Sainer Centre, Rabbi Joel will be here, and he has a terrific session scheduled for the teenagers. He'll be teaching about the law of lex talionis, or measure for measure -- not Shakespeare, but "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand".... a text that has caused Jews a lot of grief over the centuries, but whose deeper meaning (as interpreted by R. Joel) may surprise you. The class will start with a look at other ancient Near Eastern law codes, and will move on to the Torah, then the Mishnah and the Talmud. Rabbi Joel will show how each later source re-interprets the earlier ones, with a twist: each later Jewish text must take as a premise the sacredness of those that came before, so that upturning the earlier understanding requires some pretzel-like logical dexterity. This will be a double session and will include a break for lunch | ||
